The Hungry Giant

I was rushing to school the other day, with my uniform sealed in a plastic garment bag because the weather was incredibly hard on us. Hey, I wanted to make a good first impression. There were no signs that a public vehicle going to my destination was available outside of the place where I’m staying, so I had to take the long way and commute twice.

Because I’m usually lucky with averting tardiness, I arrived on time, only to be greeted by a deserted school and a padlocked main door. It was 30 minutes before class should start and there I was, trying my best not to look like a fool for not checking any notifications before I left. Classes were cancelled. The rain has apparently morphed into proportions fit for a typhoon, but strangely enough, it couldn’t be considered a typhoon – but the numbers don’t lie; the devastation…

Velociriot!

Harry Potter turned 32 on Tuesday. Does that make you feel old? That’s okay. I feel old, too, and I’m ten years younger than our beloved boy who lived. J.K. Rowling, the woman behind his creation, turned 47 on Tuesday. So in honor of their birthdays (and our first Thirsty Thursday, where we bring you delicious foods and drinks that you just have to try), it seems appropriate to toss back a butterbeer or two and maybe enjoy some cauldron cakes, right?

One of my favorite blogs, Pastry Affair, did a whole series of posts last summer detailing how to make some favorite treats from the Harry Potter series. You can learn how to make Honeydukes treats and butterbeer cupcakes, as well as cauldron cakes and, of course, butterbeer. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a decent cook but not a good baker — I’m too impatient…

Joy and Ginger

Yes, you read right.  3 days!  I LOVE pickles.  My last pregnancy I ate an entire jar of pickles and a pint of ice cream for dinner on more than one occasion.  When they are small and crisp and a bit of spice to them- WOW!  But, I never thought of making them myself.  It seemed too fussy, and I wasn’t experienced in canning.  Then I saw this recipe on www.frugallysustainable.com and thought I would give it a try.  I am so glad I did.  What a hit!

I don’t have much of a garden, we’ve had such a mild summer here.  So I bought some pickling cucumbers at the farmers market last weekend.  The smallest ones I could find, and just enough for one quart size jar.  It was hard to wait three days to try them, but it was worth it, and now that I’ve almost finished this…

Who’s out there listening and reading it would be nice to get a comment more often than once a century. I like reading your blogs and seeing what’s going on in the world.  Recipes opinions how to do things etc. Well talk to me let me know what you think about peach ketchup or apple onion chutney because I’ve tried them and have recipes for them. Talk to me about history. A nation that doesn’t study and learn from history is doomed to repeat and make the same mistakes and failures of history. We have some of the most miserable corrupt leaders in history are you blindly following them off the cliff to your own and your future generations destruction. The world is what we make it our future and history we make it positive or negative good or evil. What are your wants and needs as far as foods, clothes etc. Has anyone besides me or a few had the epiphany to build many  desalinization plants and pipelines and aquifers into the interior of our country to alleviate drought conditions. We have the fuel resources to become energy independent if we are willing to overcome the fools who continue to sabotage their development on facecious phony environmental concerns. We can build employment and support those entreprenuers operating small and home businesses by supporting them and doing business with them. Small cottage businesses may be the way to go for the future in many instances. We don’t have to starve we can be self sufficient we don’t need some bureaucrat looking over our shoulder and breathing down our neck dictating how we should live our lives or make our living. There is room for both the corporation and small entreprenuer to succeed in America in fact they should compliment each other it allows for decentralization and mutual benefit to both. I invite you to come and visit and communicate and build many great friendships and relationships the New America built can be greater than the old or worse. God and Country America Forever !!!

Malachi

Chapter 4

At the Second Coming, the proud and wicked will be burned as stubble—Elijah will return before that great and dreadful day.

1 aFor, behold, the bday cometh, that shall cburn as an oven; and all the dproud, yea, and all that do ewickedly, shall be fstubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor gbranch.

2 ¶But unto you that fear my name shall the aSun of righteousness barise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the cstall.

3 And ye shall atread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.

4 ¶Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I acommanded unto him in bHoreb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

5 ¶Behold, I will asend you bElijah the prophet cbefore the coming of the dgreat and dreadful eday of the Lord:

6 And he shall aturn the bheart of the cfathers to the dchildren, and the heart of the echildren to their fathers, lest I come and fsmite the gearth with a hcurse.

The Doctrine and Covenants

Section 110

Visions manifested to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Oliver Cowdery in the temple at Kirtland, Ohio, 3 April 1836 (see History of the Church, 2:435–36). The occasion was that of a Sabbath day meeting. The Prophet prefaces his record of the manifestations with these words: “In the afternoon, I assisted the other Presidents in distributing the Lord’s Supper to the Church, receiving it from the Twelve, whose privilege it was to officiate at the sacred desk this day. After having performed this service to my brethren, I retired to the pulpit, the veils being dropped, and bowed myself, with Oliver Cowdery, in solemn and silent prayer. After rising from prayer, the following vision was opened to both of us” (History of the Church, 2:435).

1–10, The Lord Jehovah appears in glory and accepts the Kirtland Temple as his house; 11–12, Moses and Elias each appear and commit their keys and dispensations; 13–16, Elijah returns and commits the keys of his dispensation as promised by Malachi.

1 The aveil was taken from our minds, and the beyes of our cunderstanding were opened.

2 We asaw the Lord bstanding upon the breastwork of the pulpit, before us; and under his feet was a paved work of pure cgold, in color like amber.

3 His aeyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his bcountenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his cvoice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of dJehovah, saying:

4 I am the afirst and the last; I am he who bliveth, I am he who was slain; I am your cadvocate with the Father.

5 Behold, your sins are aforgiven you; you are clean before me; therefore, lift up your heads and brejoice.

6 Let the hearts of your brethren rejoice, and let the hearts of all my people rejoice, who have, with their might, abuilt this house to my name.

7 For behold, I have aaccepted this bhouse, and my name shall be here; and I will cmanifest myself to my people in mercy in this house.

8 Yea, I will aappear unto my servants, and speak unto them with mine own voice, if my people will keep my commandments, and do not bpollute this choly house.

9 Yea the hearts of thousands and tens of thousands shall greatly rejoice in consequence of the ablessings which shall be poured out, and the bendowment with which my servants have been endowed in this house.

10 And the fame of this house shall spread to foreign lands; and this is the beginning of the blessing which shall be apoured out upon the heads of my people. Even so. Amen.

11 After this avision closed, the heavens were again bopened unto us; and cMoses appeared before us, and committed unto us the dkeys of the egathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the fnorth.

12 After this, aElias appeared, and committed the bdispensation of the cgospel of Abraham, saying that in us and our seed all dgenerations after us should be eblessed.

13 After this vision had closed, another great and glorious avision burst upon us; for bElijah the prophet, who was taken to heaven without tasting death, stood before us, and said:

14 Behold, the time has fully come, which was spoken of by the mouth of Malachi—testifying that he [Elijah] should be sent, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord come—

15 To aturn the bhearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse—

16 Therefore, the akeys of this bdispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the great and dreadful cday of the Lord is near, even at the doors.
